Discipleship
Be a Disciple and Make Disciples
Just moments before our resurrected Lord left planet earth to go back to heaven, Jesus gives his disciples The Great Commission. Jesus says: "All authority in heaven and on earth has be given to me" (Matthew 28:18, NIV). He makes it very clear that the disciples were under his authority.
Then Jesus tells his disciples in verse 19, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations," With this command, Jesus makes it clear that He extends his authority to us to make more disciples. And the way we are to make disciples today is exactly the same way the disciples made disciples two thousand years ago, "baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Matthew 28:19-20, NIV).
When it comes to making disciples, there is an element of first being a disciple ourselves, plus there is a component to 'go' - whether it is next door or to another country. There are no other options. Being a disciple is our responsibility in our own spiritual maturity. We need to seek God, not only in private but also in community. We read in Hebrews, "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another - and all the more as you see the Day approaching" (Hebrews 10:24-25, NIV). As we grow and work on being a disciple ourselves, we can also be making disciples, which is a command to all who call Jesus, Lord. We are not all evangelists in the formal sense, but we all have received gifts that we can use to help fulfill The Great Commission. Every church, without exception, is expected to be disciples who will make disciples.
It is with this in mind that we offer Life Groups, throughout the week, to help come alongside each other so that we can continue to grow in our faith and our spiritual discipline. Our next round of Life Groups we will be offering for the winter 2024 season are listed below and will be starting Wednesday, January 3rd at 6:30 pm.
